Last week I was invited by the Sync lot to speak at a new conference called CulureTech in Northern Ireland. The remarkable Mark Nagurski pulled this festival together, with almost 1,200 delegates and 90 speakers, in just 4 months.
The festival featured some great speakers on subjects ranging from digital innovation through advertising to ‘traditional’ media. Entertainment spilled into the evening hours with musical gigs from bands like The Japanese Popstars, Duke Special and the Dublin Laptop Orchestra. Derry will be the UK’s capital of culture in 2013 and this festival was a clear sign of things to come. Apparently 40% of Derry’s population is under 25 and every cabinet in the city is wired with fibre optics. Boom!
Hugh Wallace, of National Museums Scotland, whetted the audience’s appetite with a very thorough rundown of digital strategy in the cultural space. Myself and Louise Downe followed him with a good cop / bad cop analysis of the Magic Tate Ball, our pet project that keeps on giving – 100,000 downloads and counting!
